Taking a Leap by Kristen Ashley

Kristen Ashley is a go-to author for me. I always know what to expect from her. Her writing is descriptive and her heroes are always overprotective, bossy, and speak in clipped tones. “𝐴**. 𝐻𝑒𝑟𝑒. 𝑁𝑜𝑤.” Her heroines are likable, smart, with a cute way of rambling. Taking the Leap is Rix and Alex's story. Rix and Alex worked together at the River Rain Outdoor stores and are now working for the new Trail Blazer program. Alex is quiet, shy, and awkward and had secretly crushed on Rix for years. When Rix finally notices Alex and begins flirting with her, her insecurities creep up. Rix misinterprets her reactions as judgment due to past trauma. After losing his legs in an accident and being dumped by his fiance, Rix has been left with his own insecurities. This has affected his trust in others, and trust in himself. When Alex's sister tells her that she is expected in New York City as her maid of honor, Alex lies and tells her sister that she will be bringing a plus-one, Rix. When Rix finds out and hears how Alex's sister treats her, he agrees to be her fake boyfriend….even better her fake fiance. As Rix and Alex begin to spend time together "researching" they can't deny their chemistry. They may agree to a fake relationship, but there is nothing fake about it. Soon, Rix realizes it. “𝐼𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑠𝑎𝑦 𝑤𝑒’𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝐼’𝑚 𝑔𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑎 𝑓**𝑘𝑖𝑛’ 𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑒… 𝑚𝑦… 𝑔𝑜𝑑𝑑𝑎𝑚𝑛𝑒𝑑… 𝑠ℎ*𝑡.” Both Alex and Rix have a lot going on, him coping with the loss of his legs and her with her family. There were times that the storyline felt long and slow and I felt lost with some of the dialogue and inner thoughts. I would consider Rix and Alex's story to be a slow-burn, I usually prefer insta-attraction. I absolutely loved Rix and his protectiveness and how he stood up for Alex. “𝐼 𝑑𝑜𝑛’𝑡 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑑𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑠, 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑠𝑒𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑟, 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑠𝑎𝑦 ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑜. 𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑠𝑘 ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑠ℎ𝑒’𝑠 𝑑𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑔. 𝑌𝑜𝑢 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑒, 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑟𝑒𝑖𝑛 𝑖𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑘 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢’𝑟𝑒 𝑏𝑜𝑡ℎ 𝑎𝑑𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑠. 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑑𝑜𝑛’𝑡 𝑓**𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑑𝑜 𝑖𝑠 𝑠𝑎𝑦 𝑠𝑛𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑠ℎ*𝑡 𝑜𝑟 𝑔𝑒𝑡 𝑖𝑛 ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒. 𝐸𝑣𝑒𝑟.” I expect KA's heroes to declare the relationship to be forever. I struggled with Rix's belief that their relationship had an end. He claimed Alex as "mine", but with a stipulation that they will end. But…..as the story unfolds, you learn more about Rix's worries and understand why he doesn't see a forever future. When he got to the point he saw a future, it was everything I expected. If you enjoy flawed characters, slow-burn, emotional storylines I recommend Taking a Leap.
